Located at 1255 Big Bethal Road in Hampton, Sandy Bottom Nature Park is an Environmental education preserve on 456 acres with a lake & nature center set on reclaimed land.

Wednesday, February 20, 7:00 p.m. – Environmental Justice: Broad Scope & Narrow Focus

Guest speaker Gustavo Angeles, VA Chapter Sierra Club Program Coordinator on environmental justice will present two videos along with an interactive conversation to help identify and address local EJ issues.

Gustavo has experience working with immigrant communities and is now on the VA Chapter staff to assist in building local EJ campaigns.

 

Wednesday, March 20, 7:00 p.m. – The Green New Deal

We will discuss this very exciting initiative promoted by Sierra Club and other environmental groups, labor groups, and social justice groups such as the NAACP.  The three interwoven goals are equity, climate and jobs, more specifically counteracting racial and economic inequity, tackling the climate and pollution, and creating good high-paying jobs.

 

Wednesday, April 17, 7:00 p.m. – Solar for Schools and Non-Profits

Guest speakers Ruth McElroy Amundsen and John Luker will tell us how they helped arrange for solar panels on Norfolk Academy.  They work on the financing options to enable solar for schools, churches, businesses and residential homes.  Ruth is the lead for Norfolk Solar Qualified Opportunity Zone Fund and John is the chair of the Chesapeake Bay Group, Sierra Club.

 

Wednesday, May 15, 7:00 p.m. – Limiting our Waste

Cheryl Ferreira, a Sierra Club member and a resident of York County, will facilitate a program on how we as individuals can make a difference by curbing our waste and by using pollution-free ingredients in our daily lives.  We do not need to perpetuate the one-time only use for plastics, now clogging our oceans.
